one night @ the call center – Book Review

  • Book Name – One night @ the Call Center
  • Author – Chetan Bhagat
  • Pages – 289
  • Publishers – Rupa & Co
  • Price (India): Paperback Rs 95 (Indiatimes Shopping)

Well folks, one more book of Chetan Bhagat to tangle you with call center environment – One Night @ the Call Center (ON@CC) :) I do not work in a Call Center, though heard a lot about the happenings. So, it was fun to know what call center guys experience :) I read this book in just three hours, did not take a break…non-stop reading ;)

ON@CC

The book is too good, like his previous book (Five Point Someone), written in a very simple english and in first-person narration.

Coming to the characters, there are six main characters (all in the same team) managed by a boss. Shyam the main character (storyteller :P ), Priyanka (his ex-girlfriend), Varun (speedracer), Esha (wannabe model), Radhika (married and good d-i-l), Miltary Uncle (elder) and finally Mr. Bakshi (Da Boss).

The interesting part in the story is that it captures all the events happening in one single night :)

ON@CC-1
Everybody have problems in life, but we need to know how to tackle/get rid of them asap…this book will help you to do that…believe me.

On the whole the book is good, only the GOD part was a bit sulky. But still was interesting :) .

Some info:

  • I did not know that people take breaks and go to the nearby pubs to get a quick drink (of course, along with the gals)
  • Picking up people is a very tough job and now I know why all Qualis drivers always honk at night in front of my apartment :P
  • Now I can understand why all Bosses do not CC you on the mail that they send to the client/customer :(

Rohan Sippy has got the rights for producing a movie based on this book :)

This is a very nice cartoon, googled for it…

ON@CC - Cartoon
And Chetan Bhagat is busy writing screenplay for the movie based on Five Point Someone, which is coming in 2007 :P

  1. Hi Sara,
Nive to read your animated review about the book.

The fact is, this book is no where close to “Five point Someone” in terms of content, story telling and entertainment.

Infact, this book pictures Call center/centre and the the BPO insdustry in bad way.

Chetan Bhagat had hardly spent couple of days in call centre. How can he know abt the life in BPO in just 2-3 days? What he has writtern is purely fictious and is nowhere related to reality.

He mentioned about the politics at workplace and relationships that people get into in call centre. Doesn’t it happen in all the industries? We see polotics everywhere, and collegues getting into relationships is not specific to BPO. It can happen anywhere. Why are people targeting BPO? They need to understand that the BPO workforce comprise of humans and NOT some strange species.

Call centre is just another place where people work hard, earn and make a living. It’s not at all different than other industries, except for work timings.

Chetan Bhagat is a JERK who thinks of himself as a genious, after the appriciation of just one book. This book is writtern just for the sake of gaining cheap publicity. Since he has nothing significant to write, he is writing this sort of idiotic stuff.

He needs to understand that he is no Salman Rushdie and he has no right to throw mud at any industry.

May God give him some sense which he seems to have forgotton in IIT:)

  3. @Vaibhavi, well everybody knows that a story is always fictitious…so I guess one should not get personal about these and just enjoy it as a just another story :)

@Sandy, well these masalas are added just to sell the book, a typical marketing strategy, wondering if IIMA teaches this too :) )

  4. Bush is forever saying that democracies do not invade other countries and start wars. Well, he did just that. He invaded Iraq, started a war, and killed people. What do you think? Why has bush turned our country from a country of hope and prosperity to a country of belligerence and fear.
Our country is in debt until forever, we don’t have jobs, and we live in fear. We have invaded a country and been responsible for thousands of deaths.
The more people that the government puts in jails, the safer we are told to think we are. The real terrorists are wherever they are, but they aren’t living in a country with bars on the windows. We are.
