Arthroscopic Surgery on my right knee
I underwent an arthroscopic surgery on my right knee (Sep 13, 2006). After the surgery, the doctor gave us a video cassette containing the video clipping of the surgery
Since nowadays we dont use VCR anymore, we had to convert it to a DVD.
There were three complications in my right knee…
- Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) – tear
- Medial meniscus tear
- Lateral Condyle tear – Femur
All three were corrected with this surgery.
But before, just a small insight of the surgery and injuries

In the above image, you can see how the knee is placed and surgical instruments are inserted in the knee. They insert three pen sized surgical instruments on the knee, one is for illumination (using OFC cables) and camera, other is for flushing and using suction to remove the wastages, last one is to insert surgical instruments like knife, scraper, etc to perform the operation.

This image shows the longitudinal tear of the medial meniscus. Exactly what happened in my right knee
They debrided the tear, where they cleaned the tear and placed it back in the same position.

In the above image, you can see the Anterior Cruciate Ligament. In my right knee, this ligament teared from the root (Tibia). So, they have planted it back to the root with a help of Avulsion stapler
Oh that reminds me – I need to undergo another surgery in December to remove the stapler
The lateral condyle tear was debrided and scraped.Hope you enjoyed the caps, do add your comments. I really enjoyed the video, it was like a movie, and the climax was too good
)
If you folks need the full video, let me know…will try to upload it
OMG,
Seems like your surgery has tought you a lot of anatomy!!!
Yeah, atleast one needs to know what is wrong in his body, if not the right one…hehehe
Dr Saravanan IMHO u wud have made a great doc if u have studied for medicine (like Lad Labak Das)
It seems you know your subject very well Mr. Sara (typical villain dialogue in James Bond movie)
Hehehehe, thanks a lot for your comments, I really appreciate it…grrrr
I would certify that you are a excellent technical writer…
@Meena, rather a Medical Writer? hehehe…thanks for your compliments
i have one more ques to ask you …..Y did not u become a DOCTOR???????(hee…hee..heee)
@Meena, well my bro became a doc, so I took eng, as simple as that
yeah i meant medical (technical) writer…
hmm gosh!! i didnt know that it is sooooooo complicated..you made me more nervous
@Vidya, hey it is not that complicated
, but first let me know what kinda problems are there in your knee…mine is a peculiar one, the doc hasnt seen anything like this, coz i was having three problems which is rare to occur simultaneously…normally there is only Ligament Tear, but for me there were two other problems – medial meniscus tear and lateral condyle fracture…ACL tear generally occurs alone, not with medial meniscus tear
Do first check with your Doc, take an MRI and see what the prob is
I am sure it might be simple for you

Can you tell me that where did you get the operation done ? My Brother in law has the same problem and we are searching for a good surgeon.
@Prithvi, I got it operated @ Kumaran Hospital, Chennai. Surgeon’s name is Dr. David Rajan. He does surgery in Coimbatore but comes to Chennai on need basis. You can check with the hospital for more details…
hey today i saw Dr.David Rajan, in kumaran hospital.
he has confirmed for a arthroscopy surgery due to meniscal injury…..
@Arjun – All the best for your surgery
My husband just found out today that he had an indication of Medial meniscal tear to his right knee. There were also some finding of edena beneath the intercondylar notch extending to the anterior left of the latercal femroal condyle. (No I am not that technical, this was taken directly fron the doctor’s notes). He is scheduled to have surgery 1/21. My questions is what was your recovery time. My husband is self employed so no work mean no pay. Being in the autobody and automechanic field he must bend and shift his position all day. Is the recovery period long?
His doctors has told him he will only need to take a few days off. I want to nake sure he does not go back to work too early.
Thank you for such a detailed description.
Does ligaments actually heal? I’ve read somewhere that thorn ligaments doesn’t heal and can only be removed.
@Yuriy–> Well actually the ligaments do heal. It all depends upon how well you do your physiotherapy after the surgery
All the best…

@ ob.
Sorry to hear about the news ob. I guess it is better to do a surgery and get rid of it. The docs say that if it is a single tear (one injury) it can be cured with physio, etc. But if it is more than one, it is better to do a surgery and then go for a complete physio. Coz physio would help you to cure only one of the injury (well I am not an expert, it is better to confirm this with someone)
So, I would suggest you to go for a surgery
All the best…
hi,
i have a complete acl tear in my left knee.can u help me by suggesting any doc, whom i can consult except dr.david rajan as i am from orissa,it’ll be a bit far for me to go to chennai.

@ Ananya
Sorry to hear about ur ACL tear. As of now I do not have any contact of doc in Pune. The best thing you can do is contact Dr. David Rajan (through Kumaran Hospital, Chennai) and check with him directly if he knows any contact in Pune.
All the best

Hi,

Pavan, yes you can play after your surgery… Just make sure that you regularly do your physiotherapy. Post-operative treatment is the main thing which will make you play
